Muqaddimat: A Room for Critical Thinking is a new grassroots school in Tunis, making critical thinking accessible to all. Born out of its founders’ shared desire to offer courses in ideas, thinkers and worlds that are not currently taught in Tunisia, Muqaddimat makes room for long-form, debate-based teaching practices.
The school invites a cohort of guest teachers each cycle who will offer introductions [muqaddimat] or deeper dives into a broad variety of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Topics include current research in geography, anthropology, (global) history, economy, philosophy and literature. The content and quality of the courses is academically and contemporary oriented, but the doorstep is kept low – no former or formal education is required, only curiosity and a willingness to think with others.
Referencing the 14th century Tunis-born thinker Ibn Khaldun’s work The Muqaddima (Introduction), a foundational work of history, sociology, geography and anthropology, the school is inspired by Khaldun’s theoretical venturing out as viewed from the vantage point of North Africa. Simultaneously, Muqaddimat positions itself in Édouard Glissant's relational Whole-World (tout-monde), and aims to invite scholars and students to think with others, exceeding a purely cultural focus. In doing so, it aims to position the specificity of ‘the local’ in relation to the multiplicity and relationality of the global.
Muqaddimat aspires to combine reasonable teaching requirements with space for individual and collective thinking and intellectual production. It aims to fill a gap in the Tunisian educational landscape through offtering intellecturally challenging courses and reading gatherings, in multiple languages, tapping into a multiplicity of intellectual tradtions and contamporary global research practies.

تُعدّ "مقدمات: مساحة للتفكير النقدي" مدرسة شعبية ناشئة في تونس، تهدف إلى جعل التفكير النقدي متاحاً للجميع. وقد ولدت هذه المبادرة من رغبة مشتركة لمؤسسيها في تقديم مسارات دراسية تتناول أفكاراً، ومفكرين، وعوالم لا يتم تدريسها حالياً في المناهج التقليدية في تونس، حيث تفتح "مقدمات" المجال لممارسات تدريسية مطولة تعتمد أساساً على النقاش والحوار.
تستضيف المدرسة في كل دورة تخصصية نخبة من الأساتذة الزوار لتقديم مقدمات عامة أو تعمقات معرفية في مجموعة واسعة من تخصصات العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية. وتشمل هذه المواضيع الأبحاث المعاصرة في الجغرافيا، والأنثروبولوجيا، والتاريخ (العالمي)، والاقتصاد، والفلسفة، والأدب. ويمتاز محتوى هذه المسارات وجودتها بتوجه أكاديمي ومعاصر، إلا أن عتبة الالتحاق بها تظل ميسرة ومفتوحة للجميع؛ إذ لا تُشترط أي مؤهلات تعليمية سابقة أو رسمية، بل يكمن الشرط الوحيد في الفضول والرغبة في التفكير المشترك مع الآخرين.
واستلهاماً من كتاب "المقدمة" للمفكر ابن خلدون (المولود في تونس في القرن الرابع عشر)، والذي يُعدّ عملاً تأسيسياً في التاريخ وعلم الاجتماع والجغرافيا والأنثروبولوجيا؛ تستمد المدرسة إلهامها من مغامرة خلدون النظرية والانطلاق بها من منظور شمال أفريقيا. وفي الوقت نفسه، تموقع "مقدمات" نفسها ضمن مفهوم "العالم-الكل" (tout-monde) العلاقاتي للمفكر إدوار غليسون (Édouard Glissant)، وتهدف إلى دعوة الباحثين والطلاب للتفكير مع الآخرين لتجاوز التركيز الثقافي الضيق. ومن خلال هذا النهج، تسعى المدرسة إلى وضع خصوصية "ما هو محلي" في سياق التعددية والترابط مع "ما هو عالمي".
تطمح "مقدمات" إلى الجمع بين متطلبات تدريسية مرنة ومساحة رحبة للتفكير والإنتاج الفكري، سواء على المستوى الفردي أو الجماعي. وتسعى إلى سد فجوة في المشهد التعليمي التونسي عبر تقديم مسارات دراسية وحلقات قراءة محفزة فكرياً بلغات متعددة، مستفيدة في ذلك من تعددية التقاليد الفكرية وممارسات البحث العالمية المعاصرة.
